Race for Africa Map - Day 12

On Wednesday 4th May 2005, Richard, and Sam will depart from Kew Gardens in West London.  They will cycle across Surrey and Hampshire to reach Portsmouth to catch the evening ferry to Le Havre, France.  After arriving on continental soil they will head due south through the Normandy town of Angers and then into Brittany with its rocky coast and woodland valleys.

Passing through Niort they will soon reach the river Garonne and the famous wine making region of Bordeaux.  Cycling past vineyards they will approach the Bay of Biscay and the Pyrenees.  They will cross the mountains via the seaside town of Biarritz at the far west of the range and
then enter the Basque region of Spain.

Heading south east they pass through Pamplona and follow the river Ebro as it winds across the Roija region of Spain, eventually turning due south around Zaragoza and into the meseta plateau of central Spain which is generally 2,000 ft above sea level.  Cycling down east of Madrid they will pass through Puertollano and Cordoba as they reach southern Spain and the port of Malaga.

From there it's a right turn heading west along the beautiful Costa del Sol to reach Algeciras, the most southerly point of Spain and gateway to Morocco.  It's back on the ferry for the short trip across the Straight of Gibraltar to the port of Tangier and Africa! Then it's a deep breath and back the other way.
