Donate to help build food security in Kenya Food Security
Many of the communities Excellent works with are facing real challenges in growing enough food, due to the marginal nature of they land they live on, combined with unreliable rainfall.
In addition to encouraging the use of appropriate seeds and farming techniques, we may set up seed bank projects with the communities to help improve their food security.
We initiate the seed bank with a supply of quality seeds that are adapted to local conditions. These seeds are available for members of the self-help group to use, once they have terraced their land. They also commit to return double the quantity of seeds after harvest. In this way, the community build up their own seed store - ensuring that there will be seed to plant in the coming seasons - even if one harvest fails. In this way we help communities to create 'independence' and not 'dependence' and massively increase the chances of food security.
"We are now getting seeds which are readily available. We would take a longer time to go searching for seeds in the past. Before the seed bank programme we would plant late due to lack of seeds." - Munathi Self Help Group

Food security is a combination of having enough food to eat and having the means to guarantee enough food to eat in the future. Food security is essential for communities to be able to plan ahead and build sustainable livelihoods.
