Food Security

Locally adapted seeds increase food securityFood security is a combination of having enough food to eat and having the means to guarantee enough food to eat in the future. Food security is essential for communities to be able to plan ahead and build sustainable livelihoods.

25% of the communities Excellent works with have serious problems in growing enough food, due to the marginal nature of they land they live on. Having less rainfall than average, these areas can expect only one harvest a year, rather than the usual two. In addition to encouraging the use of appropriate seeds and farming techniques, we may set up seed bank projects with the communities to help improve their food security.

We initiate the seed bank with a supply of quality seeds that are adapted to local conditions. These seeds are available for members of the self-help group to use. The 'deal' is that participants have to dig terraces on their farms, increasing the chances of a good harvest. They also commit to return double the quantity of seeds after harvest, enabling the project to establish a community seed store - ensuring that there will be seed to plant in the coming seasons - even if one harvest fails. In this way we help communities to create 'independence' and not 'dependence' and massively increase the chances of food security.
