The southeast region of Kenya is semi-arid and suffers from poor soil fertility and rainfall, making it a marginal agricultural area prone to food shortages. Excellent Development has supported community self-help groups in the Machakos, Makueni and Kibwezi districts of south-eastern Kenya to improve their food and water security by terracing land, building sand dams and planting trees. Machakos & Makueni

We work through the Utooni Development Organisation (formerly Excellent Development Kenya).  The Utooni Development Organisation engages self-help groups drawn from the Kamba people of Ukambani, who have a tradition of 'mwethya' or 'working together'.

Lessons learnt from the success of these groups' achievements in improving their food and water supply, health and incomes are shared with new groups from near and far through exchange trips supported by Excellent Development funding.

Identifying the best ways to support groups from different areas and with different cultural traditions to realise the benefits of soil and water conservation is one of Excellent Development's current priorities.
