School Water Tanks Lack of clean water is a serious health risk, especially for children - a child dies every 15 seconds from diseases associated with a lack of access to safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene. It also impacts on children's ability to do well at school - children may be kept at home to do chores while their mother goes out for hours to collect water or children may miss school through having to collect water themselves. Coming to school without having washed properly and without clean water to drink also affects a child's performance in the classroom. Excellent's response is to provide water tanks in school compounds, which collect rainwater from the roof of the school. This encourages attendance at school and enables pupils to stay healthy and concentrate when they're there. It also provides water at a site accessible to the whole community. Furthermore, the time saved collecting water frees communities to focus on improving food production and creating income for school fees. To watch our film on water click here. |
